In a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research as well as the Universities of Chicago and Munich, workers were found to have a wage penalty of TWENTY PERCENT just for having a regional accent. Authored by Jeffrey Grogger, Andreas Steinmayr, and Joachim Winter, the referenced study examines the wage disparity faced by workers with distinctive regional accents in Germany. Using innovative data collection and analysis methods, the researchers found that having a strong regional accent can reduce wages by an amount comparable to the gender wage gap. Additionally, workers with regional accents often sort into occupations with less face-to-face interaction. This research sheds light on the unfortunate economic consequences of linguistic diversity.
